
Coming to a new country and learning a new language and culture, can be challenging and frightening, particularly for refugees who have had to flee their home. Reception House provides orientations, assessments, and connections to other resources in the community to help people integrate and develop a sense of belonging in Waterloo Region. As people learn about life in Canada and begin to experience their new community, they feel more confident about their future. Whether it’s learning about Canada’s Indigenous Peoples, Canadian culture and norms, or learning to ride the bus and navigate to school, grocery stores, and community centres, Reception House walks with people along their journey to becoming settled in their new community.
Staff act as guides and facilitators for people, empowering them through wraparound supports, assistance navigating community resources, and accompanying them as they acclimatize to a new community.
