Reception House is thrilled to receive the 2016 Mayor’s City Builder Award. Awarded on January 8th,2016 at Kitchener City Hall, the City Builder Award is presented to groups or individuals who have shown great initiative in their volunteerism and service to the city. This year the mayor chose five individuals and one organization to receive the award. We are honoured to be recognized among this city’s great leaders including our community partner Dr. Mike Stephenson of Sanctuary Refugee Health Centre.

As part of the federal government’s announcement to resettle 25,000 Syrian Refugees within Canada, Reception House served a record 1,000 refugees in 2016. Among other selection criteria, Reception House was chosen for it’s leadership involvement in the Refugee Resettlement Steering Committee successfully building a more inclusive and diverse city.

Upon receiving the award Executive Director Carl Cadogan stated “This recognition is a collective effort – our Board of Directors, our staff and over 200 volunteers all work hard every day, and this kind of recognition only serves to  inspire us to do more. I accept the award for all those people and especially for those we serve, refugees seeking a safe place to exist.”

We would like to thank our community partners ,funders and members. We earned this award together. Let’s continue to work together to build a safer, more inclusive city for newcomer refugees.
