Life Skills Program

The Life Skills Program provides important and short term life skill orientations to refugees who may need assistance in adjusting to life in Canada and their new home. Facilitated by Reception House staff, the life skills orientations are provided in the client’s first language, whenever possible.

Topics covered in the Life Skills Orientations include:

  • How to use appliances in a safe and appropriate manner
  • Safe and secure dwelling space
  • Laundry and hygiene practices
  • Use of domestic and personal cleaning products
  • Canadian plumbing systems and use
  • Adjusting to life in a high rise apartment building (rights and responsibilities of tenants and landlords, garbage disposal, recycling, elevators, safety, use of common areas)
  • How to read products and packaging and assistance with simple food preparation
  • Budgeting
  • Canadian cultural orientation – answering questions about norms and practices

Other services include:

  • Accompanying clients to appointments
  • Referring clients to other valuable life skills supports that may help them settle in the community
  • Accompanying clients in their search for permanent accommodation
